The greatest example of the Art Nouveau movement in Aveiro, it was formerly known as Casa Major Pessoa because it was the residence of Mário Belmonte Pessoa's family.
The project, completed in 1909, is attributed to Silva Rocha and/or Ernesto Korrodi.
The decorative profusion of the façade, with natural motifs (flowers and animals) and stylised curvilinear shapes, present in the stonework, tiles and artistic metalwork, gives it its Art Nouveau character. It is currently the Art Nouveau Museum, a branch of the City Museum and an architectural/artistic Interpretive Centre that serves as the starting point for Aveiro's Art Nouveau Route and is part of the Réseau Art Nouveau Network European Cultural Route.
