City of canals

To visit Aveiro is to let yourself be carried away by the glittering light brought by the canals that embrace the city. With 5 urban canals, this tour passes through all of them.

Strolling along the canals you'll find the region's most famous boat, the moliceiro (learn more here - reservations and tickets).

The moliceiro, a traditional boat with deep roots in Portuguese maritime culture, was used in the past to transport moliço, a group of seaweeds crucial for fertilising agricultural land (see more).

Aveiro, city of tiles

Aveiro's connection to ceramics is not new. Because of Aveiro's geography, with the presence of the lagoon front, the city has molded itself to the benefits of this proximity.

With its clay soils, the result of thousands of years of sediment replenishment from the lagoon, Aveiro has established itself as an excellent ceramics center.

Through the immense ceramics factories that used to exist in the region, the most emblematic houses and buildings are covered with the colorful tiles that came from them.
